Elasticity conversations without magical thinking
By Marin Okada
Promo Elasticity Field Lab outputs are hypotheses with documented execution context — not crystal balls. We start meetings by listing confounders on a whiteboard: weather, overlapping supplier funds, stock-outs masquerading as lifts.
We then separate “mechanical compliance” commentary from “sell-out curve” commentary so teams do not accidentally merge two different evidentiary standards. Mechanical compliance is photo-led; sell-out curves inherit whatever data quality your internal systems already have.
We end with a decision log that states what would falsify the hypothesis in the next window. If leadership wants a single number to float to the board, we push back gently and offer bounded language instead. Overclaiming erodes trust faster than admitting uncertainty.
If this sounds conservative, it is — conservative in wording, aggressive in field discipline.
